Dr. Courtney Revels-Turner, our Founder and CEO, brings deep experience in special education and inclusive practices for indviduals with disabilities to The Higher Standard Consulting and Education Services. She leads with a clear mission to deliver a Higher Standard across Education, Living, and Work, building environments where students and adults with disabilities can thrive.
With her extensive experience in teaching grades 3-12 for individuals with various disabilities and as a district administrator of Special Education, Dr. Revels-Turner has acquired the skill to identify barriers to successful and equitable programming for individuals with disabilities. She possesses a deep understanding of federal/state mandates relating to students with disabilities, Common Core and Ohio Learning standards, and research-based instructional practices, which form a strong foundation for academic growth and mastery. Dr. Revels-Turner understands programming and planning for those with disabilities require attention to key components such as academic content areas, child growth and development, effective inclusive teaching practices, and evidence-based instructional strategies and curricular..
We have an extensive depth of knowledge in teaching marginalized populations across the continuum, as demonstrated by our licensure in SPED and ESL. We can also review the current student programming outlined in the Evaluation Team Report and/or Individualized Education Plans to ensure compliance with both state and federal regulations under IDEA (2004) and (ADA).
Additionally, our program can provide highly regarded Literacy Intervention Support using Structure Literacy Programs based on the Science of Reading.
Dr. Revels-Turner has completed an Executive Leadership Studies Doctoral program through Ashland University, with her research focusing on Teacher Race and Gender as Predictors of Special Education Referrals for Black and Hispanic Males. She also holds an Educational Specialist Degree (Ed. S) in Curriculum and Instruction Mgmt. and Admin, a Masters in Special Education, and a Bachelors in Computer Information Systems-Certified Network Admin (non-renewed cert). Her teaching certifications are in Georgia and Ohio.
Dr. Revels-Turner has contributed to the textbook School Leadership and Administration: Important Concepts, Case Studies, and Simulations (11th Edition; Gorton & Alston, 2022), and her research has been published under the title When Being Special Ain't So Special: Educator Race and Gender as Predictors of Black and Latino Male Special Education Referrals.
She has also presented at the ReThink Ed National Round Table (2022), facilitated sessions at the Reimagine Me 2019 Conference, and served on the ETS Test Development Committee for Reading Test (2013) and Special Education Test (2013).
Dr. Revels-Turner possesses practical and theoretical knowledge of Restorative Practices, Trauma-Informed Practices, PBIS, and Intensive Behavior Mgmt. Techniques, and she is a Cultural Competency Trainer for the Ohio Educator Assoc. Finally, she has designed and facilitated sessions to increase building capacity through coaching and retooling of Instructional Assistants Professional Development Design.
